Shocking: Bengaluru Engineer Devastated by Rs. 11.8 Crore ‘Digital Arrest’ Scam
A man recently fell victim to an elaborate scam that cost him a staggering Rs 11.8 crore. According to a police report, the victim was initially contacted by a fraudster posing as a law enforcement officer via Skype on November 25. The individual claimed that the victim’s case was being heard in a top court and threatened to arrest his family unless he complied with their demands. The scammers used further intimidation tactics, threatening legal action unless the victim transferred funds to specific accounts. They falsely cited a non-existent Reserve Bank of India (RBI) regulation to lend credibility to their demands.
Believing the threats, the victim complied and transferred the money over time. However, when the impostors continued to demand more funds, he grew suspicious and realized he had been deceived. Consequently, he approached law enforcement officials to report the incident.
The police have since registered a complaint for cheating and impersonation under the IT Act and relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). An investigation into the scam is currently underway to apprehend those responsible. This case highlights the increasing sophistication of financial scams and serves as a potent reminder for individuals to remain vigilant and critically assess any unsolicited requests for large monetary transactions.
