Unveiling the Visionary: Meet P P Chaudhary, BJP MP Leading the Groundbreaking ‘One Nation, One Election’ Initiative

BJP MP P P Chaudhary has been appointed as the head of a key joint parliamentary committee scrutinizing bills aimed at implementing a “one nation, one election” policy. Despite his early association with the RSS, Chaudhary, 71, only entered politics in 2014, riding the Modi wave to win the Pali Lok Sabha seat in Rajasthan from the Congress. Before his political career, Chaudhary, the son of a farmer, was a senior advocate in the Supreme Court and Rajasthan High Court.

Chaudhary recently secured his third consecutive victory in the Pali Lok Sabha elections. In 2016, during his first term, he became part of several parliamentary panels and served as Union Minister of State for the Ministry of Law and Justice and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology until 2019. During his second term, he chaired the Standing Committee on External Affairs and led the Joint Committees on the Jan Vishwas Bill and the Personal Data Protection Bill.

Chaudhary hails from the border district of Pali and studied law at Jai Narain Vyas University, Jodhpur. Locally, he is known more as a prominent figure at BJP events rather than actively engaging with constituents directly, relying on his team for public interaction. In an opinion piece for The Indian Express, Chaudhary advocated for the “one nation, one election” scheme, emphasizing its potential to save resources and improve governance by reducing the frequency of elections.

He had previously introduced a Private Members’ Bill in 2019 proposing a new constitutional article to mandate simultaneous elections. He rejected claims that such elections would weaken regional parties, citing past election data to argue that voters differentiate between national and state elections. Currently, Chaudhary’s committee is examining the Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill, 2024, and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024, to advance this electoral reform.
