Frustration Mounts: Meghalaya-Assam Border Talks Stalled Amid Silence
The anticipated border talks between Meghalaya and Assam, pending for nearly two years, have faced further delays, as the second phase aimed at addressing disputes in six specific areas remains uninitiated. These areas of contention include Langpih, Borduar, Deshdoomreah, Block I-II, Psiar-Khanduli, and Nongwah-Mawtamur (Garbhanga).
Meghalaya Cabinet Minister Paul Lyngdoh attributed the delay to the absence of a constructive response from Assam, highlighting a lack of progress in resolving the longstanding border disagreements. Despite efforts, including meetings between the Deputy Commissioner of West Khasi Hills and their Assamese counterpart, Meghalaya has yet to receive encouraging feedback.
In a recent development, Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar announced the formation of a regional committee for the West Jaintia Hills district. This committee is tasked with submitting a report within two months, focusing primarily on issues concerning the Block-I area along the Assam-Meghalaya border. Upon its completion, this report will be scrutinized by the state government, which will then pursue renewed discussions with Assam to move forward in the resolution process.
Minister Dhar emphasized the urgency of this matter, instructing the government to ensure the report is finalized in a “month or two,” adding further pressure to expedite the process.
The stalemate in border discussions between the two northeastern states underscores the complexities involved in resolving territorial disputes, often hampered by bureaucratic inertia and the necessity for cooperative dialogue. The outcome of the committee’s findings and subsequent negotiations holds significant implications for both Meghalaya and Assam as they strive for a peaceful and mutually beneficial resolution.
