India Triumphantly Welcomes the World Athletics Continental Tour First-Ever Spectacle in August 2025
India is set to stage its inaugural World Athletics Continental Tour event, the ‘Indian Open,’ on August 10, 2025, in Bhubaneswar, marking a pivotal moment in the country’s athletics history. This bronze-level meet is part of the Athletics Federation of India’s (AFI) 2025 competitive calendar, highlighting the nation’s growing prominence in the track and field arena.
The World Athletics Continental Tour, initiated in 2020, serves as a crucial platform beneath the esteemed Diamond League, comprising four tiers: gold, silver, bronze, and challenger. It offers athletes worldwide an opportunity to compete on a global scale.
AFI President Adille Sumariwalla emphasized the event’s significance for Indian athletes, noting that participating in the Continental Tour will enable them to exhibit their prowess on home soil ahead of the World Athletics Championships in September 2025. This will be the most prestigious athletics event of the year, held in Tokyo from September 13-21.
India last hosted a major international athletic event with the 2017 Asian Athletics Championships, also in Bhubaneswar, indicating the city’s importance as a hub for sports events in the nation.
The domestic athletics season in India will commence in January 2025 with the national cross-country championships in Uttar Pradesh, followed by notable competitions such as the Senior National Federation Cup in Haryana from April 21-24. This event will be a qualifier for the Asian Athletics Championships scheduled in South Korea. Additional domestic events include the Indian Open throws and jumps competitions in March.
Further expanding the athletics landscape, the AFI plans to launch regional competitions in 2025, aiming to offer more exposure to athletes outside the primary circuit. The inaugural regional events will kick off in April, enhancing opportunities for emerging talents across the country.
This strategy reflects India’s ongoing commitment to elevating its status in global athletics.
