Breaking: NIA’s Bold Move – ULFA Operative Arrested for Shocking IED Plot in Guwahati on Independence Day
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrested Jahnu Baruah, an operative of the banned terrorist group ULFA (I), on December 16 for his involvement in a plot to plant Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) in Guwahati, Assam, during the 2024 Independence Day celebrations. The arrest followed intelligence-led operations conducted with the support of the Assam Police, including a search of Baruah’s residence in Dibrugarh, where several incriminating digital devices and materials were seized.
During a preliminary investigation, Baruah confessed to having planted four out of eleven IEDs that the state police recovered during the Independence Day celebration. The devices were strategically placed in prominent areas of Guwahati, including Pan Bazar, Dispur, Gandhi Mandap, and Satgaon, as part of a militant protest and boycott call by the ULFA (I) leadership. The group’s SS Commander-in-Chief, Paresh Baruah, had previously issued a video warning of severe consequences for those who defied their instructions.
Baruah’s arrest followed weeks of surveillance and monitoring by the NIA, which identified him as a key suspect through a combination of technical and human intelligence. The agency took over the investigation from the state police on September 17 and uncovered that the IED planting was orchestrated under the directive of Aishang Asom, also known as Abhijit Gogoi, and other senior figures within the ULFA (I).
This operation marks a critical step in thwarting the ULFA (I)’s violent agenda, which aimed to incite terror, cause significant property damage, and loss of life during national celebrations. The investigation is ongoing, and further developments are anticipated as authorities continue to unravel the extent of the operation and its network.
