Fiery Uproar in Parliament: Mahua Moitra Criticizes Government and Ex-CJI Chandrachud, Raises Judge Loya’s Mysterious Death
TMC MP Mahua Moitra launched a scathing critique against the BJP-led central government, accusing it of undermining India’s Constitution and eroding democracy over the past decade. During a Lok Sabha debate on 75 years of the Constitution, Moitra criticized unnamed judicial figures, hinting at former CJI D.Y. Chandrachud, for compromising the independence of the judiciary. She took issue with the former CJI’s selective discussion on bail rights, highlighting overlooked cases involving figures like Gulfisha Fatima and Umar Khalid. Moitra also questioned the ethics behind Chandrachud hosting Prime Minister Narendra Modi at private events, suggesting such actions could influence judicial decisions.
Moitra underscored that the BJP’s governance involved indirect strategies to undermine democracy, contrasting it with the overt actions during Indira Gandhi’s Emergency. She highlighted concerns over voter disenfranchisement and accused the government of institutional bias through the Citizenship (Amendment) Act. Moitra condemned BJP-ruled states for “bulldozer justice,” targeting minorities, and restricted free speech rights in Jammu and Kashmir following Article 370’s abrogation.
The TMC MP also scrutinized the independence of the Election Commission, pointing to premature resignations and alleging bias during the last Lok Sabha elections. She harshly criticized government agencies like the CBI and ED for being misused as tools for political vendettas, referencing a personal case against her.
Moitra’s speech caused uproar, particularly her allusion to the death of judge B.H. Loya, with Union Minister Kiren Rijiju threatening parliamentary action. Despite the heated debate, Moitra insisted her speech was within her rights, challenging the legitimacy of Rijiju’s warnings. The Speaker assured a review of Rijiju’s remarks while urging members to focus on the constitutional discussion.
