Unyielding Spirit: Assam’s Call to Embrace Israel’s Survival Tactics Amidst Adversity – Himanta Biswa Sarma’s Bold Vision
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma emphasized the importance of learning from Israel’s resilience during a program commemorating ‘Swahid Diwas’ in Sonitpur district. Highlighting Assam’s insecure borders with Bangladesh, Myanmar, and West Bengal, Sarma noted that Assamese people are minorities in 12 districts. He stressed that Assam must emulate Israel’s use of knowledge, science, technology, and courage to survive and thrive as a community.
Swahid Diwas marks the sacrifice of Khargeswar Talukdar, regarded as the first martyr of the Assam Agitation, which aimed to preserve Assamese identity and culminated in the signing of the Assam Accord in 1985. Despite this agreement, Sarma asserted that threats from “outsiders” persist and urged economic self-reliance to prevent the state from falling into the hands of unknown entities.
Sarma criticized the Congress, alleging that its policies contributed to the Assamese losing land rights. He called for renewed efforts to safeguard the community’s cultural and economic identity, indicating that delimitation exercises offer temporary political protection. The Chief Minister reported that approximately 10,000 hectares of land have been freed from encroachment over the past three years and urged the youth to engage in economic activities to reclaim control.
Highlighting the shift from bandhs and protests to pragmatic work in farming and industry, Sarma emphasized the importance of hard work and rationality in building a resilient community. He outlined governmental initiatives to protect Assam’s cultural identity, citing plans for medical colleges, universities in every district, and infrastructure projects, such as bridges over the Brahmaputra River.
