Thrilling Victory at Guwahati Masters: Ashwini-Tanisha Defend Women’s Doubles Title, Sathish Karunakaran Triumphs in Men’s Singles
Guwahati, December 8 (IANS) – It was a triumphant day for Indian badminton as top-seeded women’s doubles pair Ashwini Ponnappa and Tanisha Crasto, along with men’s singles third seed Sathish Kumar Karunakaran, clinched the titles at the Guwahati Masters Super 100 on Sunday. In an action-packed finals day, Ashwini and Tanisha, the defending champions, showcased their dominance by defeating China’s Li Hua Zhou and Wang Zi Meng with a straight-set victory of 21-18, 21-12, completing the match in just 43 minutes. Their win marked a successful title defense without losing a single game.
In the men’s singles final, Sathish Kumar Karunakaran added another victory to his resume by overcoming China’s Zhu Xuan Chen with a 21-17, 21-14 scoreline. This victory granted the 23-year-old his second Super 100 title, having previously won the Odisha Masters last year. With this confidence-boosting win, he now sets his sights on performing well in the upcoming events in Bhubaneshwar.
The competition, co-organized by the Badminton Association of India and Assam Badminton Association, is designed to provide international exposure to budding Indian talent. On the final day, India had aspirations for three titles; however, rising star Anmol Kharb was unable to sustain her initial momentum and fell to China’s Cai Yan Yan in a tightly contested women’s singles match, losing 21-14, 13-21, 19-21.
India and China concluded the tournament with two titles each. Meanwhile, the Malaysian duo of Chia Weijie and Lwi Sheng Hao secured the men’s doubles crown by defeating China’s Huang Di and Liu Yang with a 20-22, 21-15, 21-17 comeback victory. In the mixed doubles, Zhang Han Yu and Bao Li Jing of China triumphed over England’s Rory Easton and Lizzie Tolman 21-15, 21-16. The tournament, in its second edition, continues to contribute significantly to the development of young shuttlers in India.
