Urgent: Tripura’s Manu LCS Trade Halt Sparks Outrage Among Exporters – Immediate Solutions Needed!
The Exporter and Importer Association of Kailashahar Sub-division in Unakoti District has appealed to Tripura’s Chief Secretary, JK Sinha, for intervention in addressing the disruption of international trade through the Manu Land Customs Station (LCS). Operations at this trading port have been suspended since November 27 due to local protests following an incident involving ISKCON member Chinmay Krishna Das in Bangladesh.
Protesters have blocked the LCS with bamboo barricades, effectively halting all trade activities. In a plea to the Chief Secretary, the association expressed frustration over the apparent lack of administrative response to restore operations. They emphasized that neither the Central nor the State Government has officially mandated the port’s closure, rendering the continued disruption legally questionable. The association cited a precedent at Agartala’s Akhaura LCS, where administrative actions promptly cleared similar obstructions, allowing trade to resume swiftly. Despite this, trade at Kailashahar remains stagnant.
The suspension has severely impacted over a hundred families who rely on the port for their livelihoods, including laborers, vehicle operators, and loaders. Additionally, the halt in trade has resulted in significant revenue losses, approximately Rs 25 lakh, further aggravating the local economic situation.
The association’s letter urgently calls for the removal of the barricades and the immediate resumption of trade, urging the authorities to ensure fair treatment of all border trade ports across the state. Their plea underscores the critical need for administrative action to restore normalcy and prevent further economic distress.
