Transforming Lives: India’s Heartfelt Development Assistance Uplifts Myanmar
Nay Pyi Taw, Dec 6: On Friday, several significant developmental projects funded by India under a $5 million annual grant were inaugurated in Myanmar, aimed at boosting civilian infrastructure and enhancing living standards. The projects, part of the Border Areas Development Programme (BADP) and Rakhine State Development Programme (RSDP), were launched by India’s Ambassador to Myanmar, Abhay Thakur, alongside Myanmar’s Union Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement, Dr. Soe Win, and Border Affairs Minister, Lt Gen. Tun Tun Naung.
The initiatives in Chin State and the Naga Self-Administered Zone include the completion of 35 roads and bridges and three education centers, marking a monumental advancement in improving local socio-economic conditions. Additionally, infrastructure in Gwa and Mrauk U townships saw enhancements, with projects like a water supply system and incinerator aimed at environmental conservation completed.
Costing a total of $4.5 million, these projects resonate with local developmental needs, reflecting a shared commitment between India and Myanmar to uplift communities in border areas, including Sagaing, Chin, and Rakhine regions. This collaboration underscores the goal of sustainable development and improved living conditions.
Furthermore, these projects, funded under the Memorandum of Understanding provisions, have previously supported renewable energy, e-Learning, and rural infrastructure initiatives across various regions in Myanmar, such as Yangon, Nay Pyi Taw, and Mandalay. The inauguration follows an agreement in October for five Quick Impact Projects that will enhance infrastructure in agriculture, rural development, education, handloom, and disaster risk reduction.
The robust cooperation between the Indian and Myanmar governments highlights a joint resolve to empower and improve the socio-economic landscape, promising long-term benefits for Myanmar’s people.
