Celebrating Triumph: Assam Farmer’s Inspiring Victory with Prestigious National Award in New Delhi
Kokrajhar, Dec 6: Akbar Ali Ahmed from Chirang district in Assam’s Bodoland Territorial Region has been honored with the National Farmer Award at the Millionaire Farmer of India 2024 event, organized by Krishi Jagran alongside the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). Celebrated for his innovative farming practices and forward-thinking approach, Akbar has significantly impacted the agricultural landscape, earning him recognition on a national platform at the event hosted from December 1 to 3 at the ICAR Pusa Mela Ground in New Delhi.
Six years ago, Akbar embarked on a remarkable journey, transitioning from traditional agriculture to pioneering the cultivation of dragon fruit on his two-hectare Khidmat Agro Nursery & Farm. This venture quickly established him as a leader in Assam’s dragon fruit production, with an impressive yield of 30 tonnes per hectare by the second year, generating over ₹1 crore annually. His determination, investment in sturdy infrastructure, and adoption of sustainable methods underscore his long-term vision for farming.
Beyond personal success, Akbar remains committed to empowering the local agricultural community. As a collaborator with the Department of Cooperation, he has facilitated numerous workshops and training sessions, guiding Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS) towards sustainable farming, crop diversification, and new market linkages. His expertise has been instrumental in inspiring farmers to adopt modern horticultural techniques.
Akbar’s farm employs over 20 workers, providing stable livelihoods and training, further benefiting his community. His influence extends to neighboring farmers, with many now considering dragon fruit farming as a viable alternative. In addition to dragon fruit, Akbar has diversified into other high-value horticultural crops like malta, sweet lime, pineapple, and apple ber, enhancing the agricultural richness of the region.
His story is a testament to the transformative power of innovative farming, serving as a beacon of hope and opportunity for farmers across Assam and beyond.
