Bangladesh Urgently Summons Indian Envoy After Agartala Security Shockwave
Guwahati: Diplomatic tensions have risen between India and Bangladesh following the arrest of ISKON leader Chinmoy Krishna Das in Agartala. In response to the escalating situation, Bangladesh summoned Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma to Dhaka. This development follows Bangladesh’s decision to close its visa and consular office in Tripura after a security incident on Tuesday.
The tensions are rooted in concerns about the treatment of Hindu minorities in Bangladesh, prompting protests by around 50 people in Agartala. Some protesters even breached the premises of the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission, exacerbating the situation. Dhaka expressed its unease with how the local police managed the incident, highlighting its impact on the mission staff’s sense of security.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs has described the incident as “deeply regrettable” and emphasized that diplomatic and consular properties should remain unharmed. Consequently, the Indian government has bolstered security measures for the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi and other diplomatic missions in the country.
Following a meeting, High Commissioner Pranay Verma stressed the importance of maintaining a positive and collaborative relationship between the two nations. He highlighted that cooperative areas such as trade, power transmission, and the supply of essential commodities could be jeopardized if tensions aren’t addressed. The situation underscores the need for both nations to work together to resolve these diplomatic challenges and ensure the safety and security of their respective missions.
