Rejoice: Resilience Shines as Manipur’s Educational Institutions Reopen Amid Strife – Northeast News
Imphal, November 23: The Manipur government has declared that educational institutions in the Imphal Valley districts and Jiribam will resume classes from November 29. This decision comes after schools and colleges were shut on November 16 due to the discovery of six bodies—three women and three children—found in the Jiri and Barak rivers in Manipur and Assam, respectively. The deceased were part of the Meitei community who had gone missing following a violent clash between security forces and alleged Kuki-Zo militants in Jiribam on November 11, where ten insurgents were killed.
An official order from the Directorate of Education-Schools states that regular classes will restart for all educational facilities, including government, government-aided, private, and central schools from the announced date. Concurrently, an order from the Higher and Technical Education Department indicates that government educational institutions and government-aided colleges, including state universities, will recommence classes starting Friday.
The Imphal Valley and Jiribam have been under prohibitory orders up until Thursday. Though classes are set to resume, it remains uncertain if the current curfew will be lifted by Friday, as no new directive has been issued yet.
The state has been embroiled in ethnic violence since May last year, leading to over 250 deaths and displacing thousands. This unrest stems from conflicts between the Meitei community in the Imphal Valley and the neighboring hill-dwelling Kuki-Zo groups.
In light of these developments, there are ongoing efforts to recover from the ethnic tensions, including initiatives like healthcare support provided by Assam Rifles to those displaced by the violence.
The resumption of educational activities is seen as a step towards normalization, but it also highlights the continuing challenges in reconciling deep-rooted ethnic divisions within the region.
