Discover the Enchantment: CM Pema Khandu’s Vision to Transform Arunachal into a Global Tourism Oasis
At the 12th International Tourism Mart in Kaziranga, Chief Minister Pema Khandu presented a bold vision for transforming Arunachal Pradesh’s tourism sector, focusing on sustainable development and placing the state on the global tourism map. He emphasized that Arunachal Pradesh aims to become a prominent international destination by highlighting its stunning natural landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and varied adventure tourism opportunities.
Khandu praised the International Tourism Mart as an essential platform that connects key stakeholders, encourages partnerships, and showcases the unique offerings of the Northeast region. He noted the event’s role in promoting the Northeast as a unified tourism destination, stressing the importance of collaboration in enhancing the area’s tourism potential.
His vision revolves around sustainable and eco-friendly tourism, with plans to upgrade infrastructure, improve connectivity, and develop treks, trails, and cultural festivals to attract travellers worldwide. Initiatives like homestays, skill development, and community empowerment are central to this approach, aiming to not only increase tourist numbers but also stimulate the economy, preserve cultural identity, and protect the environment.
Arunachal Pradesh, with its strategic location bordering Myanmar, Tibet, and Bhutan, sees potential in collaborating with the Indian Army under the Vibrant Village Programme (VVP) to transform border villages into sustainable tourism hubs. This initiative seeks to boost both infrastructure and community livelihoods.
Highlighting the state’s unparalleled adventure offerings, including trekking and rafting, Khandu noted a 205% growth in tourist footfall over the past decade. He reiterated the state’s commitment to sustainable and responsible tourism practices that empower local communities. In a move to bolster adventure tourism, Khandu invited operators to attend the upcoming Adventure Tour Operators Association of India (ATOAI) conference in Tawang.
The event, inaugurated by Union Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, also saw the presence of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and other notable figures. Khandu thanked leaders for prioritizing northeast tourism and reassured investors of Arunachal Pradesh’s supportive environment for innovative ventures.
