Outrage Erupts as Teen Activist Licypriya Kangujam’s Voice Silenced: Facebook Restricts Account Amid Jiribam Killings Uproar | Heartfelt Guwahati News
Licypriya Kangujam, a 13-year-old climate activist from Manipur, has reported that her official Facebook account was restricted after she spoke out against the abduction and killing of six Meitei women and children in Jiribam. As the Special Envoy for the President of the Republic of Timor-Leste, Licypriya expressed her concerns on the platform X, claiming that the restriction is an attempt to silence her. She emphasized her determination, stating, “No amount of threats can silence my voice.” Licypriya challenged Meta and Facebook to justify the restriction, insisting she had not violated any policies. She further questioned if Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was behind the restriction, suggesting a political motive.
The notification from Facebook cited an emergency order under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, 2000, as the reason for the account restriction. Meanwhile, in Churachandpur district of Manipur, hundreds protested against the killings in Jiribam, demanding justice and a judicial inquiry. The protests, led by the Kuki Women Organisation for Human Rights, highlighted ongoing tensions, with police and local Kuki groups disagreeing on the identities of the deceased.
In related news, police in Rourkela arrested a man for harassment using a fake Facebook account, showcasing broader concerns about misuse of social media platforms in India. This incident involved a man creating a fictitious account to harass his ex-girlfriend six years after their relationship ended.
These events underscore the challenges in balancing free speech and security on social media, and the potential for political influence and personal vendettas to impact digital platforms’ operations.
