Shocking: Sig Sauer Ordered to Pay $11 Million to Philadelphia Man for Self-Firing Pistol Incident
A Philadelphia jury awarded $11 million to a man injured when his Sig Sauer P320 pistol discharged without the trigger being pulled. This is the second significant ruling this year against the gun manufacturer for the P320 model. Sig Sauer, based in New Hampshire, was deemed negligent, selling a defective gun and holster. The incident reportedly caused severe leg damage to George Abrahams, a U.S. Army veteran, when the gun fired while in his pocket. The verdict follows a three-week trial where lawyers highlighted the pistol is prone to accidental discharge, leading to similar claims from over 100 individuals nationwide.
The company, however, denies any fault, describing the P320 as extensively tested and safe, and plans to appeal the decision. Earlier, a federal jury granted $2.35 million to a Georgia man for a similar incident involving the P320. Sig Sauer counters that user negligence contributed to the accidents and maintains that the firearm is reliable. Plaintiffs’ lawyers argue the military version includes additional safety features not present in civilian models, raising concerns about the pistol’s safety. In 2019, a similar incident led Philadelphia’s transit agency to replace all P320s. Despite offering compensation in a previous class action settlement for pre-2017 models, legal claims against Sig Sauer continue to accumulate.
