PM Modi’s Historic Rio De Janeiro Summit: Strengthening Global Ties with Italy, Portugal, and Indonesia
During the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged with several global leaders to bolster diplomatic relations and explore opportunities for collaboration. After concluding a visit to Nigeria, Modi met with leaders from Italy, Indonesia, and Portugal, focusing on enhancing ties across various sectors.
On the sidelines of the summit, Modi discussed with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni strategies to fortify cooperation in defence, security, trade, and technology. Both leaders expressed enthusiasm for the India-Italy Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025-29, which aims to elevate bilateral ties.
In a meeting with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, Modi commemorated 75 years of diplomatic relations between India and Indonesia. The discussions highlighted initiatives to advance cooperation in security, healthcare, and commerce, enhancing the India-Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
Modi also conversed with Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, emphasizing the potential for increased economic collaboration, particularly in renewable energy and green hydrogen. Both leaders acknowledged the importance of strengthening defence relations and people-to-people connections.
Additionally, IMF Deputy Managing Director Gita Gopinath commended India’s efforts in reducing poverty and hunger during her meeting with Modi. Modi reiterated India’s commitment to food security and poverty elimination.
While Modi briefly interacted with U.S. President Joe Biden, the details of their conversation remain undisclosed. Modi also engaged with leaders from Brazil, Singapore, and Spain, furthering diplomatic discourse during the summit.
This series of meetings underscores India’s proactive diplomacy in advancing ties with key global partners across critical domains, reflecting a strategic approach to international relations and cooperation.
