Heart-Wrenching Tragedy in Manipur: Protester Fatally Shot Amidst Jiribam Tensions
Security personnel continue to patrol sensitive areas of Manipur amid escalating tensions. The Manipur government has established a two-member panel to investigate a deadly confrontation between a special commando team and protestors in Jiribam, which resulted in the death of a 20-year-old man and injury to another. This announcement by Chief Secretary Vineet Joshi followed mass resignations from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) office bearers in Jiribam due to the volatile situation.
Following an attack on BJP and Congress offices in Jiribam by a mob, police allegedly opened fire, leading to the death of Khundrakpam Athouba and wounding 26-year-old K. Bishan. Chief Minister N. Biren Singh held a meeting with National Democratic Alliance (NDA) legislators to address the law-and-order crisis, while the Naga People’s Front (NPF), a BJP ally, reaffirmed its support for the government despite the turmoil.
The state extended the ban on Internet services in seven districts and prolonged curfews in parts of Imphal Valley. Meanwhile, members of the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity defied curfew orders to shut down government offices, protesting recent violence, including the tragic deaths of six people abducted from a relief camp.
In response to the unrest, mobs have vandalized residences of BJP ministers and MLAs. The situation in Jiribam led the state to transfer three cases, including the killing of a tribal woman, to the National Investigation Agency for further investigation. The Manipur unit of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) urged both Central and State governments to address and resolve the escalating ethnic conflict, condemning the widespread violence and loss of life.
