Urgent: Tensions Rise in Anand – FIR Filed After Sacred Texts Disrupted from Ferris Wheel
On Sunday, police registered an FIR against four individuals for allegedly “hurting religious sentiments” in Khambhat town, Anand district, after receiving a complaint about torn pages of a religious text being scattered from a giant wheel during the final day of a 10-day Diwali mela at Chakdol ground. The individuals involved turned out to be juveniles classified as Children in Conflict with Law (CCL). They appeared before the Juvenile Justice Board on Monday.
Deputy Superintendent of Police S.B. Kumpavat reported that the incident occurred late Sunday evening when the juveniles, aged between 12 and 14, were attending the mela. Following a local custom, they brought a bag of paper pieces to throw from the giant wheel. The investigation revealed that the children unknowingly collected sheets from discarded books near Nareshwar Talao, one of which may have included a religious text.
Some local residents noticed the scattered paper and alerted the police, seeking to file an FIR. The police lodged a case under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for hurting religious sentiments. The juveniles were presented before the JJ Board and subsequently released.
The incident heightened tensions in the town, prompting a heavy police presence. Kumpavat stated that the police assured residents by clarifying the incident and filing the necessary complaint.
