Revolutionizing Journalism: Embrace the Transformative Power of AI in Today’s Dynamic Press Landscape | MorungExpress
During the National Press Day celebration on November 16 in Dimapur, insights on the evolving landscape of media were shared by prominent figures. K Temjen Jamir, editor of the Ao vernacular newspaper Tir Yimyim, highlighted the indispensable role of AI in today’s technological era, noting its ability to perform tasks like writing and editing. He cautioned that even as AI begins to replace human roles, the ultimate responsibility for content accuracy remains with journalists. Jamir stressed the necessity for accountability in maintaining the quality and reliability of reporting, asserting that while the “nature of press” has evolved, its core mission—to inform and educate—remains constant. He underscored the media’s power to influence societal and governmental change, advocating for a commitment to truth and efficiency.
Dr. Aküm Longchari, editor and publisher of The Morung Express, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that the principles of a free press remain unchanged despite new media formats. He noted a worrying trend of a divide between “facts and feelings,” where societal narratives are driven more by emotion than truth. Longchari called for media professionals to engage in self-reflection and uphold journalistic integrity, particularly criticizing the concept of “paid news” which compromises media values. He emphasized the importance of maintaining credibility to gain public trust in Nagaland’s media as a public service institution.
Imkong Walling, President of the Dimapur Press Club, introduced the 2024 press day theme—’Changing Nature of Press’—as a reflection of the rapidly evolving media landscape spurred by the digital news revolution. Walling remarked on how instant news has reshaped journalism in unimaginable ways. The event was a call to adapt to these changes while steadfastly upholding the ethics of journalism.
