Jairam Ramesh’s Fiery Challenge: Uncover the Secret Meeting Between Manipur CM and PM Modi – ‘Where are the Photographs?’
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh questioned the lack of transparency surrounding a recent closed-door meeting between Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. According to reports, the meeting focused on the ongoing ethnic violence in Manipur, which flared up last year.
Ramesh expressed skepticism over the absence of photographs from the meeting, which is unusual for official interactions involving the Prime Minister. He noted that the Prime Minister’s Office had shared images of other state leaders’ meetings, such as one with Arunachal Pradesh CM Pema Khandu. “Why this reluctance? Or is it that the meeting never actually took place?” Ramesh speculated in a post on X.
In his statement, Ramesh highlighted that the embattled Chief Minister reportedly had a brief meeting with PM Modi, attended by senior officials, including the self-styled Chanakya and the Raksha Mantri. This meeting’s secrecy stands out especially against a backdrop where transparency is critical, given the severe ethnic tensions and unrest in the north-eastern state.
Ramesh’s critique follows his earlier condemnation of Biren Singh, accusing him of failing to adequately address the turmoil in Manipur. He called attention to citizens’ inquiries about whether the Chief Minister had a direct conversation with PM Modi regarding the state’s crisis.
Adding weight to his argument, Ramesh pointed out that typically, such high-profile meetings are documented and publicized, thus casting doubt on whether the meeting was as significant as reported or if it occurred at all. His comments came in line with others, such as Sharad Pawar, who have criticized PM Modi for neglecting the Manipur crisis and called for immediate intervention.
The lack of visual proof from an otherwise well-documented office raises questions about the transparency and seriousness of the discussions aimed at resolving Manipur’s ethnic violence.
