Unveiling Heritage and Heart: Former Tripura Deputy CM’s Captivating Journey in ‘From Royal Upanayana to Tagore’
Former Tripura Deputy Chief Minister Jishnu Dev Varma, now the designated Governor of Telangana, unveiled his book “Views, Reviews, and My Poems” in Agartala on Sunday, July 28. The event highlighted Dev Varma’s writing journey and personal reflections. “Every man has a story; some can write and some cannot,” he said, emphasizing the universality of storytelling.
The book, starting with 32 poems, is a rich tapestry of essays, articles, and poems that delve into various subjects, including the history of Tripura and travelogues. Dev Varma stressed that the book was written with young readers in mind, featuring short articles to cater to their preferences. He also explored themes of eternity, suggesting a shift in the perception of time in modern days.
A notable section discusses the ‘Upanayana’ ceremony, where Dev Varma shares a poignant conversation with his mother, Maharajkumari Kamala Prabha Devi, about the ritual’s hair shaving aspect. Another chapter, “Folding the Himalayas,” recounts his experience dressing like the Dalai Lama, illustrating the notion that pursuing one’s dreams can be empowering.
Dev Varma stated, “Every man has a book in them… There is no age for writing or poetry because they never die.” He revealed that his writing journey began when his mother gave him a book, “Boijanti,” to translate during his school days.
The book includes an extensive chapter on the North East, which discusses the relationship between Rabindranath Tagore and the Tripura Royal Family, highlighting their cultural heritage. Dev Varma also dedicates chapters to his parents, recounting a story involving Rabindranath Tagore and his father, the late Rajkumar Ramendra Kishore Dev Varma, and sharing his mother’s significant role in breaking traditional barriers.
With “Views, Reviews, and My Poems,” Dev Varma offers a glimpse into his personal experiences and the cultural richness of Tripura, underscoring the timeless essence of stories and poetry.
