Journey of Identity: Former Tripura Deputy CM’s Powerful New Book Explores Personal and Cultural Narratives from Royal Upanayana to Tagore
During the release of his book Views, Reviews, and My Poems in Agartala on Sunday, July 28, Former Tripura Deputy Chief Minister Jishnu Dev Varma, now the designated Governor of Telangana, remarked, "Every man has a story; some can write and some cannot."
The book opens with 32 poems and includes a series of essays, articles, and travelogues reflecting on various subjects and the rich history of Tripura, crafted with young readers in mind. Dev Varma emphasized that due to shorter attention spans, the book features concise articles. He also explores the concept of eternity and remarks on the evolving perception of time.
One notable section is dedicated to the ‘Upanayana’ ceremony, where Dev Varma shares a candid conversation with his mother about its ritualistic elements. Another chapter titled "Folding the Himalayas" recounts his experience dressing like the Dalai Lama, illustrating the importance of living out one’s dreams.
Dev Varma, reflecting on his personal writing journey that began in class 8 with a translation task from his mother, states, "Every man has a book in them. Every man has a story; some can write and some cannot. There is no age for writing or poetry because they never die."
The book’s longest chapter, encompassing 11 pages, delves into the history of the North East and the relationship between Rabindranath Tagore and the Tripura Royal Family. Dev Varma highlights that Tagore’s Bisarjan and Rajarshi drew inspiration from Tripura.
Dev Varma also pays tribute to his parents in separate chapters. His father, Rajkumar Ramendra Kishore Dev Varma, exemplified simplicity and had a memorable interaction with Tagore during his college days. His mother, Kamala Prabha Devi, a prominent artist, broke traditional royal norms.
With Views, Reviews, and My Poems, Dev Varma invites readers into his world, celebrating both personal anecdotes and the cultural heritage of Tripura, underscoring the timeless essence of storytelling and poetry.
