NHPC Launches Pre-Feasibility Study for Pump Storage Project in Tripura’s Dhalai District
In response to Tripura’s escalating power demands, the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) has commenced a pre-feasibility study for a pump storage project in Longtharai Valley, Dhalai District. Peak hour power requirements in the state have hit 300 MW and are expected to surpass 750 MW.
Biswajit Basu, Managing Director of Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL), addressed the media on Wednesday, emphasizing the state’s limited hydroelectric resources, primarily confined to the Dumboor Hydro Power Plant. To tackle this, NHPC has identified Longtharai Valley among other potential sites for the new project and has engaged Tata Consulting Engineers to prepare the pre-feasibility report. "Positive findings could revolutionize Tripura’s energy sector," Basu remarked.
TSECL is also advancing a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for underground power cabling in Agartala, part of the city’s Smart City initiative, scheduled to proceed in two phases. This involves placing both 11 kV and Low Tension lines underground. Basu confirmed the DPR is nearing completion, with financial planning concurrently in progress. "Preparation for underground cabling in Agartala has already begun," he stated.
To fortify Tripura’s power infrastructure, TSECL has assigned power officials and linemen to round-the-clock duties across 67 power sub-divisions. Over 20,000 distribution transformers have been installed, and replacements are slated to commence in early August, aligning with pre-Durga Puja maintenance.
Enhancements to call center capacities and availability of mobile contact numbers at the sub-divisional level are in place to ensure prompt reporting and resolution of power issues, Basu concluded.
This development underscores a significant step towards modernizing and stabilizing Tripura’s power supply in light of its growing electricity needs.
