Empowering Bravery: Himanta Biswa Sarma and Our ‘Nari Shakti’ Lead the Inspiring Fight Against Child Marriage
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has commended the crucial contributions of Self-Help Group (SHG) members in mitigating child marriage, through a recent post on microblogging site X. Sarma specifically lauded the efforts of 40 lakh SHG members, referring to them as “true ambassadors of women empowerment.”
“Our Nari Shakti is at the forefront of furthering our social welfare initiatives,” Sarma posted. He emphasized that the robust network of 40 lakh SHG members leads the charge against child marriage through inventive grassroots campaigns, serving as exemplary advocates for women’s empowerment.
The Assam State Rural Livelihood Mission has initiated a new social security program involving 4 million rural women to combat child marriage. These individuals are significantly contributing by spreading awareness, organizing street plays, and conducting Child Marriage Prevention Campaigns via the Women Protection Cell and Gender Research Centre.
One of the key strategies includes re-enrolling children in schools or offering skill enhancement opportunities to address the issue of early school dropouts. Additionally, the ‘Ejupi Gos’ initiative fosters the celebration of the birth of girl children by presenting saplings to families. SHG members also play a vital role in informing families about beneficial schemes like ‘Sukanya Samriddhi.’
Efforts by these women have underlined the importance of education and long-term societal change in preventing child marriage. SHG members, with their grassroots influence, are creating impactful shifts by empowering communities with knowledge and resources, aiming for sustainable development and gender equality.
