Monsoon Session Day 1: Govt Braces For Intense Scrutiny Over Alarming Paper Leaks

New Delhi: On the inaugural day of the 18th Lok Sabha’s monsoon session, the new government could face intense scrutiny. The Lok Sabha secretariat has listed a question on rampant paper leaks and the revamping of the National Testing Agency (NTA), with Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan expected to respond.

Congress MP Manickam Tagore and DMK leader Kalanidhi Veeraswamy have inquired about the government’s plans to overhaul the NTA following recent NEET-UG paper leaks that impacted over 2.4 million students. They also questioned if multiple paper leaks in the past seven years have affected more than 20 million students, and what protective measures are being implemented. Additionally, they have pressed whether the government is considering scrapping NEET exams, as some states like Tamil Nadu have requested.

Revolutionary Socialist Party MP NK Premachandran has also asked about the number of cases registered over the NEET-UG paper leaks and the corresponding governmental actions.

The government is slated to answer 250 questions on the first day, preparing for the budget presentation on Tuesday. Of these queries, 20 are starred—requiring oral answers in the House—while the remaining 230 are unstarred.

Other significant questions address disbursement of funds for centrally sponsored schemes, actions to reduce pending cases under the Companies Act, scholarships for SC/ST students, and the impact of climate change on Majuli island.

Question Hour starts at 12 pm in the Lok Sabha and 11 am in the Rajya Sabha.

Additionally, six bills, including the Finance Bill 2024—which is expected to propose various tax changes—are set to be tabled. The other bills include the Disaster Management (Amendment) Bill, the Boilers Bill, the Bharatiya Vayu Vidheyak, the Coffee (Promotion and Development) Bill, and the Rubber (Promotion and Development) Bill.

The session is poised for a rigorous start, with education and examination security featuring prominently among the issues to be tackled.
