Urgent Plea: Gaurav Gogoi’s Congress Delegation Implores Governor to Halt Tripura Election Violence

Agartala, 18th July 2024: An All India Congress delegation met Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu on Thursday, voicing deep concern over the escalating situation in Tripura, particularly in Gandacherra subdivision. Acting on directives from Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, the delegation addressed pressing issues related to the three-tier Panchayat elections.
Key figures in the delegation included Deputy Speaker of the Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi, North Eastern Region in-charge Girish Chodankar, senior Congress leader Tariq Anwar, and All India Congress editor Szarita Laitphlang. They were accompanied by state Congress president Asish Kumar Saha and MLA Sudip Roy Barman.
Post-meeting, Gaurav Gogoi expressed grave concerns about the situation in Gandacherra. “The Congress is deeply worried. There are attempts to destabilize Tripura, akin to the fraternal riots in Manipur. Despite police presence, incidents continue unchecked,” he said. Gogoi stressed the need for immediate intervention to assist those affected by the recent turmoil.
Girish Chodankar underscored the dire law and order situation, stating, “We have requested the Governor to ensure all necessary compensations are distributed. The opposition cannot contest the elections fairly due to the ruling party infringing on democratic rights.”
Chodankar highlighted pre-election concerns, revealing that the Congress alerted the police administration when elections were announced, but inefficacy allowed continued unrest. “We demand adherence to the democratic model advocated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The current environment around the Panchayat elections is unacceptable,” he added.
The delegation assured the media that Governor Nallu had committed to investigating their concerns thoroughly. They also announced plans to visit various areas, including Agartala city, on Friday to assess the ground situation and take further necessary actions.
This visit underscores the Congress’s commitment to addressing the challenges in Tripura and ensuring a fair democratic process.
