Supreme Court’s Landmark Decision: NTA Ordered to Release NEET-UG Results by Saturday Noon, Bringing Relief to Students

The Supreme Court has mandated that the National Testing Agency (NTA) release the complete results of NEET-UG 2024 on their website, sorted by city and examination center, while concealing the identities of candidates. This directive must be fulfilled by 12 PM on July 20.

A bench, led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and including justices JB Pardiwla and Manoj Misra, was responding to multiple petitions alleging irregularities in the NEET-UG exam. Senior advocate Narendra Hooda, representing the petitioners, argued for the transparency of declaring all student results.

The Solicitor General contended that full results are not usually published as they are considered the personal property of the students. In response, CJI Chandrachud questioned why dummy roll numbers could not be used to publish results sequence centre-wise to maintain transparency.

The court decided that NTA should publish the marks obtained by students in the NEET-UG 2024 exam while ensuring the students’ identities are masked.

Acknowledging the issue of leaked question papers in Patna and Hazaribag, CJI Chandrachud emphasized the need to determine whether these leaks were isolated incidents or more widespread. He highlighted that students are currently disadvantaged because they lack knowledge of their results and asserted the importance of analyzing center-wise mark patterns without revealing students’ identities.

The Supreme Court will continue its hearing on the alleged irregularities on July 22.
