Alarming Allegations of Corruption in Pathsala Municipality Over Water Scheme Mismanagement
Residents of Pathsala municipality are expressing grave concerns over alleged corruption and mismanagement of critical water supply schemes in religious areas. A substantial sum of approximately Rs 20 lakhs, allotted for establishing pure drinking water systems in Harimandir and Bhagwati, appears to have been squandered, as the infrastructure is now in a state of disrepair barely a year and a half after installation.
Jiten Talukdar, secretary of the Pathsala Bazaar Committee, outlined the timeline and costs associated with the water supply projects. "In 2022, eight water supply projects were initiated in Pathsala, costing around Rs 10 lakhs in total. Two of these were situated at Hari Mandir and Bhagwati. Although these projects were completed in 2023 and initially provided water, the supply ceased a year ago. Additionally, there have been allegations of using substandard materials," Talukdar reported.
The situation is particularly dire in the Bhagwati region, where the annual Rasa Mahotsav is marred by deteriorating infrastructure. Contractor Hamidur Rahman of Jorhat, who oversaw these projects, is under scrutiny for the poor quality of work.
Mismanagement and corruption within the Pathshala municipality, overseen by BJP leader and corporator Jolly Chaudhary, are reportedly widespread. The installation of substandard pipes and motors has been a recurrent issue, leading to the schemes’ failures.
Despite residents raising these concerns with the municipality a month ago, no action has been taken. The municipal council’s inaction has only fueled public outrage.
This situation is exacerbated by the recent transformer explosion in Guwahati’s Birubari, which injured three individuals and has raised further safety concerns.
Pathsala residents continue to await a resolution as the mismanagement of essential infrastructure perpetuates their distress.
