Exciting Reformation: Centre Revitalizes NITI Aayog with Inclusion of Union Ministers from Allies
The Narendra Modi-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government has restructured the National Institution for Transforming India (NITI Aayog), the Union government’s premier public policy think tank. According to an official notification, Prime Minister Modi will continue to serve as chairperson, and economist Suman K. Bery remains the vice-chairperson. The reconstitution follows recent changes in the council of ministers.
The restructured NITI Aayog includes four full-time members: former ISRO Director General and scientist VK Saraswat, agricultural economist Ramesh Chand, pediatrician Dr. VK Paul, and renowned economist Arvind Virmani. Additionally, 15 Union Ministers have been appointed as either ex-officio members or special invitees.
The ex-officio members from PM Modi’s cabinet are Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. Special invitees to the think tank include Union ministers Nitin Gadkari (Road Transport and Highways), JP Nadda (Health), HD Kumaraswamy (Heavy Industries and Steel), Jitan Ram Manjhi (Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises), and Rajiv Ranjan Singh alias Lalan Singh (Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying), each representing BJP ally parties.
Other notable special invitees are Union Ministers Virendra Kumar (Social Justice and Empowerment), Rammohan Naidu (Civil Aviation), Jual Oram (Tribal Affairs), Annpurna Devi (Women and Child Development), Chirag Paswan (Food Processing Industries), and Rao Inderjit Singh (Statistics and Programme Implementation), with Naidu and Paswan also representing BJP allies.
Established in 2015, NITI Aayog replaced the 65-year-old Planning Commission, signaling a strategic shift in India’s public policy approach. This latest reconstitution reflects the government’s emphasis on broad-based and diversified expertise to drive the nation’s transformative agenda.
