Calcutta High Court Questions 2016 Primary Teachers’ Recruitment, CBI Seizes Digital Evidence

The Calcutta High Court on July 16 raised concerns about the recruitment of nearly 42,000 primary school teachers for State-run schools in 2016. The court has asked the West Bengal Board of Primary Education to submit details of the 2016 selection panel within 14 days. Justice Amrita Sinha directed the Board to present the 2016 teachers’ recruitment panel, which the Board claimed had expired.

The massive recruitment was based on the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) conducted in 2014. However, several candidates raised issues about irregularities in the process. In April, a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) report to the Calcutta High Court highlighted discrepancies in the 2014 TET-based recruitments.

The High Court has scheduled the next hearing for July 30, requiring the Board to provide detailed information on the appointment of these teachers. Petitioners sought a direction for the publication of the merit list as per Rule 8(5) of the West Bengal Primary School Teachers’ Recruitment Rules, 2016.

In a related development, the CBI team seized multiple servers and hard disks from the office of M/s. S Basu Roy and Co. in Kolkata’s Southern Avenue on July 12. The aim was to retrieve digital backups of the optical mark recognition (OMR) sheets from the 2014 TET, following a recent court order.

The investigation into the recruitment anomalies continues to unfold, placing the West Bengal Board of Primary Education under significant scrutiny.
