Thriving Amidst Protectionism: Unveiling the Path to Progress – An Insightful Analysis by The Shillong Times
Threat of Anarchy Looms Over Meghalaya
Editor,
Recent violence and harassment of non-tribal laborers in Meghalaya suggest the region may be slipping into anarchy. The push for stricter entry and residency laws for fellow Indian citizens stems from an unwarranted sense of insecurity that dates back to Meghalaya’s days as part of Assam. Despite half a century of statehood and numerous special provisions—like the Land Transfer Act, Sixth Schedule, and job reservations—the feeling of insecurity persists. Further isolationist legislation in our globalized age is unlikely to remedy this, posing a critical question: will new laws offer the needed security and cooperation to face real-world challenges?

Decline in Education Quality in Meghalaya
Editor,
Several factors, including nepotism and favoritism, are eroding the quality of education in Meghalaya. My recent RTI application revealed corrupt practices where schools favor specific candidates. To address this, I propose implementing a roster system for vacancies, consolidated advertisements for recruitment, simultaneous examinations and interviews, and adopting transfer policies akin to those in Assam. Presently, teachers remain stagnant, often neglecting basic duties. These measures can help rejuvenate our education system.

Violence: A Stark Reality of American Politics
Editor,
The editorial "Violence Antithetical to Democracy" (ST July 16, 2024) was compelling. The recent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump echoes a dark history of violence against American presidents. From Abraham Lincoln to Ronald Reagan, multiple leaders have faced violent attacks. Even presidential candidates like Robert F. Kennedy were not spared. Plato warned that democracy, susceptible to manipulation and instability, can easily descend into chaos. The chronic violence underscores a disturbing fact: political life in the U.S. remains deeply scarred by violence.
