Urgent Warning: HNYF Cautions Police Against Pushing Them Towards HNLC Conflict
HNYF Members Threaten to Join HNLC Amidst Police Intimidation: Sadon K Blah
SHILLONG, July 16: The president of the Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF), Sadon K Blah, has warned that some members of the organization may consider joining the banned Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) if police intimidation persists. Blah revealed that several senior leaders have expressed readiness to relocate to Bangladesh and associate with the HNLC should the authorities continue their harassment. “As the president, I have so far managed to dissuade them from taking such a drastic step,” Blah stated on Tuesday.
Blah criticized the police for hastily linking HNYF members with the HNLC based merely on acquaintances or photos with HNLC cadres. He explained that such connections were established when HNLC leaders were in Meghalaya attempting to facilitate peace talks. However, these talks collapsed after the government rejected the HNLC’s conditions.
He condemned the police for ongoing intimidation and harassment by allegedly associating HNYF members with the proscribed outfit. Recently, four senior HNYF leaders, including Tarson Lymba and Sanborlang Rapsang, were arrested and are currently in judicial custody for alleged links with the HNLC. Although the police claim to have evidence supporting these allegations, Blah expressed skepticism. "We will see the evidence when it is produced in court. I am confident that the police do not have any substantial proof linking our members to the HNLC," he added.
HNYF is awaiting the findings of the ongoing investigation to be presented in court. Blah asserted that the organization would not remain silent about the continuous police harassment of its members. “We will wait for the court’s ruling, but we will also actively challenge the unfair treatment by the police,” he affirmed.
The situation underscores the fragile line between advocating for peace and the risks of escalating tensions due to perceived or real harassment by law enforcement.
