Stunning Triumph: Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Jio Surpasses Airtel and Vodafone-Idea, Gains Nearly 22 Lakh New Subscribers
In May 2024, Reliance Jio, led by Mukesh Ambani, saw its mobile subscriber base increase from 47.24 crore in April to 47.46 crore, marking a significant gain of 21.9 lakh wireless users, according to data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on Tuesday. This growth cements Reliance Jio’s position as India’s largest telecom operator. In contrast, Vodafone Idea continued to experience a decline, losing 9.24 lakh wireless subscribers and bringing its user base down to 21.81 crore in May. Bharti Airtel, on the other hand, added 12.5 lakh mobile customers during the month.
The overall growth in mobile subscribers was underscored by a substantial uptick in Mobile Number Portability (MNP) requests. In May 2024 alone, 12 million subscribers submitted MNP requests, increasing the total number from 973.60 million at the end of April to 985.60 million by the end of May, as per TRAI’s data.
Additionally, India’s total broadband subscriber count rose to 93.5 crore by the end of May 2024, reflecting a monthly growth rate of 0.72 percent.
This data highlights the dynamic shifts within India’s telecom sector, with Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel continuing to expand their user bases, while Vodafone Idea faces ongoing challenges in retaining its subscribers.
