
Historic Milestone: Supreme Court Celebrates First Ever Judge from Manipur, Inspires Unity
Imphal, July 16: The Supreme Court of India has appointed Justices N. Kotiswar Singh and R. Mahadevan as judges of the apex court, with Justice Singh becoming the first judge from Manipur to achieve this distinction. This appointment restores the Supreme Court to its full strength of 34 judges, including Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud. The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended their appointments on July 11.
Justice N. Kotiswar Singh, currently the Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, has had a distinguished career. Born on March 1, 1960, in Imphal, Manipur, he enrolled as an advocate in 1986 and was later designated as a senior advocate by the Gauhati High Court in 2008. He served as an additional judge and then as a judge of the Gauhati High Court before his appointment to the High Court of Manipur in 2013, and later, his transfer back to the Gauhati High Court in 2018.
Justice R. Mahadevan, born in Chennai and an alumnus of Madras Law College, has been the acting Chief Justice of Madras High Court since May 2024. Elevated as a judge of the Madras High Court in 2013, Justice Mahadevan has a notable legal background.
Union Minister of State (I/C) for Law & Justice, Arjun Ram Meghwal, announced their appointments on social media platform X, confirming the decision taken by the President in consultation with the Chief Justice of India. Meghwal shared an image of the official appointment document, underscoring this significant development in India’s judiciary.
These appointments are a significant milestone, particularly highlighting the inclusion of representation from Manipur at the highest judicial level.
