Agartala, 16th July 2024: Within 24 hours of a delegation’s return from the troubled Ganda Twisa sub-division, a new fire incident ignited further tension. The delegation, which included Minister Tinku Roy, had visited following a spate of violence triggered by the death of Parameshwar Reang at the Ananda Mela fair.
Reang’s death incited widespread unrest fueled by outrage from the local working-class community. The flames of discontent quickly spread, devastating homes, livestock, and livelihoods. Minister Roy met with affected citizens, acknowledging their distress: “The working-class people are now on the streets. This is their manifestation.”
Following the initial incident, Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha directed the delegation to assess the situation. Efforts to provide immediate relief were set in motion, with orders for 25 percent of the compensation to be disbursed within two days. Both the District Magistrate and the Revenue Department are actively engaged in crisis management.
Despite these measures, another fire broke out within a day of the delegation’s return, consuming two shops and resulting in a loss estimated at Rs 27 lakh. Firefighters, hindered by a lack of sufficient water supply, managed to prevent further damage. Security forces and police are patrolling to prevent gatherings, and the administration is urging restraint.
District Magistrate Saju Vaheed A confirmed that the recent fire resulted from a short circuit. He appealed to the public to avoid spreading rumors on social media.
