Unite in Wanderlust: India and Austria Commit to Boosting Tourism for a Brighter Future
India and Austria on Wednesday underscored the importance of enhancing tourism and cultural exchanges, emphasizing the need to boost tourist numbers by expanding flight connectivity. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who landed in Vienna on Tuesday for a significant State visit, highlighted that it has been over four decades since an Indian Prime Minister last visited Austria, marking this event as a historic step towards strengthening bilateral ties. This visit coincides with the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations.
This visit made history as the first in 41 years, with the last being by Indira Gandhi in 1983. Recognizing tourism’s critical role in fostering economic and inclusive growth, both countries have called for cooperation between relevant agencies to increase tourist flows and extend direct flight routes. Furthermore, the appreciation for cultural exchanges was evident as Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer and PM Modi acknowledged the growing Austrian interest in yoga and Ayurveda.
An official release from the PMO highlighted efforts to enhance bilateral cultural collaborations in various fields such as music, dance, opera, theatre, films, literature, and sports under a recently signed Memorandum of Understanding on Cultural Cooperation. Additionally, the leaders emphasized the importance of skills development and the mobility of skilled professionals to support engagement in high-tech sectors. They welcomed the implementation of the bilateral Migration and Mobility Agreement, which facilitates these exchanges while combating irregular migration.
During the visit, PM Modi had productive meetings with Austrian leaders, including Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen and Chancellor Nehammer, to reinforce bilateral cooperation and explore new collaborative opportunities. Modi also engaged with business leaders from both countries, expressing optimism about leveraging future opportunities to enhance trade and commercial linkages.
In a series of posts on X, Prime Minister Modi shared insights into his discussions, noting the positive outcomes and mutual confidence in expanding India-Austria cooperation and economic ties.
