Mayor Promises Green Belt Revival: Transforming Brahmapuram into a Lush Oasis
Mayor M. Anilkumar launched the Decarbonisation India Alliance campaign in Kochi on Wednesday by planting a tree, marking a significant step towards a sustainable future. During a day-long session organized by the Energy Management Centre Kerala, Society of Energy Engineers and Managers, Asar, and India Blockchain Alliance, the Mayor emphasized the necessity to revisit the proposal for creating a green belt around the Kochi Corporation’s waste treatment facility in Brahmapuram. He assured that the city council would deliberate on the proposal to take appropriate action.
The campaign aims to accelerate India’s transition to a sustainable, low-carbon future, targeting carbon neutrality by 2070. Mayor Anilkumar highlighted the Corporation’s vision for a more inclusive Kochi with pedestrian-friendly walkways, especially designed for the specially-abled. He identified the area between Vyttila and Kadavanthra metro stations as ideal for developing pedestrian zones due to the confluence of road transport, metro services, and the Water Metro.
Furthermore, the Mayor called for active public participation to enhance Kochi’s cleanliness by utilizing localized waste treatment plants, ensuring sustainable waste disposal across all divisions within the Corporation area. He also showcased the recently commissioned solar power facility at the Government Higher Secondary School in Elamakkara, which stands as a model for future sustainable initiatives.
Mayor Anilkumar’s address underlined the city’s commitment to sustainability through practical measures and community engagement, setting the stage for a greener, cleaner Kochi as part of the broader Decarbonisation India Alliance efforts.
