Market Jitters: Sensex and Nifty Plunge by Half a Percent, Sparking Investor Concern
Domestic benchmark indices, Sensex and Nifty, faced a decline of approximately half a percent on Wednesday. The broader market at the BSE also saw a downturn, with the Mid-Cap index dropping by 0.19 percent and the Small-cap index falling by 0.69 percent.
At market close, the Sensex fell by 427 points, or 0.53 percent, to end at 79,925. Meanwhile, the Nifty shed 109 points, or 0.45 percent, settling at 24,324.
In the forex market, the Indian rupee weakened slightly, depreciating by two paise to close at 83.51 against the US dollar.
On the Multi Commodity Exchange, gold prices experienced an uptick. The precious metal’s August contract increased by 0.6 percent, trading at 72,832 rupees per 10 grams. Silver, slated for the September contract, also saw gains of 0.51 percent, trading at 93,445 rupees per kilogram at the time of reporting.
In the global crude market, Brent crude prices dipped by 0.33 percent, reaching 84.38 dollars per barrel.
