Revitalize Your Maritime Ambitions: MoS Defence Unveils GAINS-2024 to Empower Innovative Start-Ups in Ship Building
Kolkata, July 10 (IANS): Minister of State for Defence, Sanjay Seth, applauded Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd’s efforts to support Start-Ups and private firms in fostering innovative technological solutions in ship design and shipbuilding. During his visit to Kolkata, Seth launched the second edition of the GRSE Accelerated Innovation Nurturing Scheme (GAINS).
GAINS, initiated in 2023, is an open challenge designed to stimulate innovations in AI, robotics, renewable energy, and overall efficiency enhancements. GRSE’s Chairman and Managing Director, Cmde P R Hari IN (Retd), shared that out of 51 initial proposals, six progressed to the second round. Two projects were ultimately chosen and rewarded for their Detailed Project Reports (DPRs). One project, an MSME, is developing an AI-based Material Code Generation and Management System, while a Start-Up is creating robots for exterior ship painting. The projects are expected to complete by the end of 2024 and mid-2025, respectively. GRSE will discuss a profit-sharing model with the private entities post-development, funded by GRSE’s R&D budget.
The second edition, GAINS-2024, launched by the Minister, anticipates increased participation and will focus on similar themes. The initiative aligns with India’s policies like Atmanirbhar Bharat, Make in India, and Start-Up India, promoting both defence capabilities and economic growth.
Cmde Hari also highlighted GRSE’s aggressive pursuit of export orders, revealing that GRSE has already exported ships to countries including Guyana, Mauritius, and Seychelles. The INS Kirpan, built by GRSE, is currently operated by the Vietnam Navy. Contracts have also been signed for ship exports to Germany and Bangladesh, with further agreements in progress. Currently, GRSE is constructing 28 ships, 18 of which are for the Indian Navy.
This initiative signifies a strategic move by GRSE to integrate private sector expertise and enhance technological advancements in shipbuilding, contributing significantly to both national defence and industrial growth.
