Himanta Biswa Sarma’s Scathing Rebuke: Exposes Congress Era’s Devastating Embankment Failures
On July 5, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma robustly rebutted allegations made by Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, who compared the state’s Water Resources Department to an ATM machine enabling corruption. Addressing media concerns in Dibrugarh, where Gogoi had previously levied these charges, Sarma denied any involvement of the current administration in such malpractices.
Gogoi has accused BJP ministers of having clandestine agreements with contractors, facilitating the embezzlement of funds from the Water Resources Department. He described systemic corruption within the department, suggesting a deep-rooted nexus between government officials and private contractors.
Responding assertively, Chief Minister Sarma pointed out that the embankment breaches this year have been minimal, attributing the failures to structures built during the Congress regime. “The breaches in the embankments this year are fewer, and the ones that have broken are not the ones constructed during our tenure,” Sarma asserted. He emphasized that the embankments that have failed were constructed when Congress was in power, distancing his administration from any culpability.
“If someone indirectly insults their own father, what can I do? There is no solution in my hands. The embankments that have broken were built during the Congress era. If someone chooses to criticize their own father, what can I do?” Sarma remarked, implying that Gogoi’s criticisms were misplaced and redirecting the scrutiny towards past administrations.
During his visit to Dibrugarh, Sarma assessed the flood situation and engaged with affected residents, who voiced their grievances and concerns. He underscored the efforts being made by his government to manage the crisis and regain public trust amidst the allegations.
By highlighting the discrepancies between the administrations, Sarma sought to refute Gogoi’s accusations and reaffirm his government’s commitment to transparency and efficiency in handling the state’s water resources and infrastructure.
