Manipur: Bishnupur Bolsters Security to Protect Farmers This Harvest
Manipur’s Bishnupur district administration and security forces have reviewed security arrangements to ensure farmers can safely reach their fields during the ongoing harvesting season, as ethnic violence and security concerns continue to affect vulnerable parts of the state.
The review meeting was held on Tuesday at the Mini Secretariat Complex, where officials also assessed security preparedness for the Manipur Legislative Assembly election, which is scheduled to take place next year.
Deputy Commissioner Pooja Elangbam stressed the need for close coordination among security agencies to maintain law and order through both the harvest season and the electoral process. She said protecting farmers and ensuring a peaceful harvesting season were key priorities for the administration, alongside preparations for the democratic exercise.
Superintendent of Police Ksh. Ravikumar Singh outlined the security deployments planned to safeguard farming activities in vulnerable fringe areas. He said police personnel would maintain a presence alongside farmers as they work in their fields.
Singh also reviewed the district’s election readiness, drawing on data from previous elections to identify locations that would require additional security measures.
The ethnic violence that erupted in Manipur in May 2023 has left several agricultural areas and buffer zones between the state’s hill and valley districts difficult for farmers to access safely without security support, making the arrangements discussed at Tuesday’s meeting critical for the current harvest.
The meeting was attended by commanders of the Central Armed Police Forces, the Additional District Magistrate and local Sub-Divisional Officers.
