Itanagar Police Bust Interstate Child Trafficking and Sex-Trade Racket
Itanagar: In a significant breakthrough, law enforcement agencies have dismantled an interstate child trafficking and sex-trade racket preying on young girls from Arunachal Pradesh. Authorities confirmed the rescue of two minors and the arrest of five individuals in connection with the case, spanning regions from Arunachal Pradesh to Delhi.
The disturbing revelations came to light on June 10, when the Itanagar Women Police Station received a report concerning the disappearance of two girls, aged 15 and 16. Swift police action led to their rescue from a residence in Chimpu, Papum Pare district. According to Itanagar SP Rohit Rajbir Singh, initial investigations hinted at a kidnapping; however, interrogations revealed a more sinister narrative involving an interstate sex-trafficking network.
The 15-year-old girl from East Kameng district disclosed she was duped into moving to New Delhi under the guise of a waitress job, orchestrated by Api Brey, a known Delhi pimp. Initially a house help in Itanagar, the girl faced severe verbal abuse, prompting her to contact Brey for an escape. Upon her arrival in Delhi, she was repeatedly sexually assaulted by several individuals. Brey’s connection to the girl was through his previous marriage to someone known to her.
Earlier this year, the girl returned to Arunachal Pradesh and resumed work as a house help in Itanagar, only to encounter further mistreatment. Desperate, she reconnected with Brey, who promised her and her 16-year-old friend from Kurung Kumey district jobs as waitresses in Delhi. The duo planned their departure for June 11 but was intercepted by the police on June 10.
Subsequent investigations revealed that Brey had informed the racket’s kingpin about the availability of northeastern girls for the flesh trade. Mimi Bagang facilitated the 15-year-old’s trafficking to Delhi in July 2023.
Authorities arrested five individuals, including Brey, Bagang, and 59-year-old Jeet Bahadur Khatri from Nepal, apprehended on July 10. Khatri, identified as the kingpin, operated a brothel from his rented house in Delhi’s Munirka area. Also apprehended was Sushil Kumar alias Ballu, 42, on July 10. The arrest of 51-year-old Raghunath Menon, a Delhi High Court advocate accused of multiple sexual assaults on the minor, followed on July 11.
This case highlights the urgent need for vigilance and robust interventions to combat human trafficking and safeguard vulnerable children from such heinous crimes.
