Urgent Alert: T.N. CM Stalin Fiercely Condemns Karnataka, Urges Unity in Emergency All-Party Meeting on July 16 Over Cauvery Water Crisis
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin Slams Karnataka for Withholding Cauvery Water, Calls for All-Party Meeting
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK President M.K. Stalin has condemned the Karnataka government for failing to release Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu. In a statement dated July 15, 2024, Stalin declared that such actions, which adversely impact Tamil Nadu’s farmers, are unacceptable. To address this pressing issue, he has convened an all-party meeting for July 16 at the Chennai Secretariat. The meeting, chaired by Tamil Nadu Minister for Water Resources Duraimurugan, will include all legislative representatives and aims to determine the future course of action, including legal consultations.
Karnataka previously decided on July 14 to discharge Cauvery water at a rate of 8,000 cusecs per day to Tamil Nadu, following a directive from the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC). However, this amount falls short of the 1 tmcft (11,500 cusecs) mandated by the CWRC. Instantly, Karnataka revealed plans to appeal this decision to the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA).
Stalin’s swift response and the subsequent all-party meeting underscore the Tamil Nadu government’s resolute stance on securing water for its farmers, ensuring that their welfare remains a top priority. The participation of legal experts in the meeting reflects the commitment to exploring all avenues to address the issue effectively.
This development is pivotal as it highlights the ongoing inter-state disputes over water sharing, which significantly impact agricultural communities and the overall welfare of the states involved. The outcome of this high-level consultation is anticipated keenly, with both political and farmers’ communities watching closely.
