National, News Alert:
Vikram Misri Appointed India’s New Foreign Secretary
New Delhi, July 15: Vikram Misri, a seasoned diplomat from the 1989 batch of the Indian Foreign Service, assumed the role of India’s Foreign Secretary on Monday. Misri, born in Srinagar in November 1964, has a distinguished career marked by various significant roles at the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and global Indian missions.
Educated at Scindia School in Gwalior, Misri pursued a Bachelor’s degree with Honours in History from Hindu College in Delhi and an MBA from XLRI, Jamshedpur. His initial overseas assignment took him to the Embassy of India in Brussels (1991-1993), followed by a tenure in Tunis.
Misri’s close association with the Prime Minister’s Office began in April 1997 as Private Secretary to then Prime Minister I.K. Gujral. He later served as Private Secretary to PMs Manmohan Singh (2012-2014) and Narendra Modi (2014).
Throughout his career, Misri held key positions including roles in the High Commission of India in Islamabad, the Embassy of India in Washington DC, Deputy High Commissioner in Sri Lanka, and Consul General in Munich. He was appointed Ambassador to Spain in 2014, followed by Ambassador roles in Myanmar and China (2018-2021). His tenure in China was marked by significant challenges, particularly the 2020 Galwan Valley conflict.
Reflecting on Sino-Indian relations during the 4th High-level Track II Dialogue in 2021, Misri emphasized the importance of consistent and mature diplomatic discourse to manage the ongoing border issues. Misri’s recent appointment as Deputy National Security Advisor saw him work closely with NSA Ajit Doval, further solidifying his strategic expertise.
Misri’s promotion to Foreign Secretary comes at a crucial time, with India navigating a complex geopolitical landscape and enduring tensions with China. His extensive experience is anticipated to bring stability and strategic insight to India’s foreign policy.
