Chandipura Virus Suspected in Gujarat: Four Children Dead, Preventive Measures Underway

In Gujarat’s Sabarkantha district, four children have tragically died due to a suspected infection of the Chandipura virus. The deceased include one child from Sabarkantha, two from the neighboring Aravalli district, and one from Udaipur in Rajasthan. Currently, two additional children are undergoing treatment at Himmatnagar’s civil hospital.

Local authorities have responded promptly by sending samples of all affected children to the National Institute of Virology for confirmation, with results expected within four to five days. Chief District Health Officer of Sabarkantha, Raj Sutariya, confirmed the development while speaking to The Indian Express.

In response to the outbreak, local teams have been deployed to implement preventive measures aimed at eradicating sandflies, the vectors responsible for the virus’s transmission. Strategies include dusting affected areas with medicinal powders, mosquito control, raising public awareness, and monitoring suspected cases.

About Chandipura Virus

The Chandipura virus is a rare and potentially fatal pathogen known to cause fever, flu-like symptoms, and acute encephalitis, which is the inflammation of the brain. It is transmitted by vectors such as mosquitoes, ticks, and sandflies. The illness can progress rapidly, leading to coma and even death. Classified under the Vesiculovirus genus of the Rhabdoviridae family, the virus poses significant health risks.

Symptoms

The initial symptoms of Chandipura virus infection resemble those of the flu but can quickly escalate to neurological impairment and severe encephalitis. The progression from symptom onset to severe illness can occur within 24 hours. The case fatality rate in outbreaks has ranged from 56% to 75%.

Common symptoms include:

  • Sudden high fever
  • Headache
  • Convulsions and vomiting
  • Unconsciousness in severe cases

Treatment

There is no specific treatment for Chandipura virus infection. However, early detection, hospitalization, and symptomatic treatment can help prevent fatalities.

As local authorities continue their efforts to curb the outbreak, the prompt implementation of preventive measures and public awareness remains crucial in mitigating the spread of this deadly virus.
