Manipur Battles Rising Dengue Cases: Minister Calls for Community Effort
Imphal: Dengue cases are escalating in Manipur, with the mosquito-borne disease claiming a life in Imphal East district. Health and Family Welfare Minister Sapam Ranjan Singh reviewed the situation on Sunday, detailing ongoing efforts to control the outbreak.
Minister Singh reported 148 confirmed dengue cases in August 2024, rising to 230 in the current month. Emphasizing the need for community involvement, Singh stated, "The government alone cannot combat this disease; community participation is crucial."
The state’s health department is actively monitoring and tracing dengue cases, working in coordination with the Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) teams and conducting source reduction programs. Singh, however, expressed concern over a lack of cooperation from some residents, highlighting incidents where health teams faced hostility or were denied access to inspect mosquito breeding grounds.
He stressed that stagnant water in seemingly innocuous places, like small ritual pots or flower pots, can become breeding grounds for mosquitoes, urging all sections of society to cooperate fully with health authorities. Singh assured that the health department is following all protocols to combat dengue but reiterated that community cooperation is essential to effectively contain the outbreak.
Dengue is a viral disease common in tropical and subtropical areas. Symptoms include high fever, headache, rash, and muscle and joint pain, with severe cases leading to serious bleeding and shock. While treatment involves fluids and pain relievers, those infected a second time are at higher risk of severe complications.
In conclusion, Minister Singh appealed for collective action from the community to tackle the life-threatening disease effectively. Cooperation from everyone is vital to overcoming this public health challenge.
