Devastating Birmingham Shooting: 4 Lives Lost, 17 Injured in Tragic Gunfire at Five Points South
Four people were killed and 17 others injured on Saturday evening in a targeted shooting at Birmingham’s lively Five Points South entertainment district, police report. The incident occurred shortly after 11 p.m. when multiple individuals exited a vehicle, opened fire, and fled the scene, according to Birmingham Police Chief Scott Thurmond.
The attack is believed to have specifically targeted one individual, who is among the deceased. The remaining victims were inadvertently caught in the crossfire. Chief Thurmond indicated that the shooting was a paid hit, stating, “Someone was willing to pay money to have that person killed.”
Currently, no suspects are in custody, prompting the Birmingham Police Department to collaborate with the FBI and other agencies. Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin has noted the potential use of illegal gun conversion devices, or “switches,” which transform semi-automatic weapons into fully automatic ones. The U.S. Attorney’s office had initiated a crackdown on these devices earlier in July.
Police found three victims—two men and one woman—dead at the scene. A fourth victim died later at the University of Alabama Hospital. Additional gunshot victims have been identified, with some arriving at local hospitals on their own. Eleven of the injured were taken to the University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital, where at least four are in life-threatening condition.
This shooting forms part of a troubling trend in the city, which has experienced multiple mass shootings this year, including a nightclub shooting in July and a public library shooting in February. Birmingham police are seeking surveillance footage from local businesses to aid their investigation.
Officer Truman Fitzgerald emphasized the cultural roots of gun violence, stating, “We’re seeing far too many arguments being settled by bullets.” The Birmingham Police Department is committed to apprehending those responsible for this devastating act of violence.
