Inspiring Achievement: Meet the Youngest IRS Officer Who Cracked UPSC Exam at 22 on First Attempt, Secures AIR
Suchiter Sharma, at just 22, achieved the remarkable feat of clearing the UPSC Civil Service Examination on his maiden attempt, earning the distinction of being the youngest IRS officer in India. The UPSC exam, famed for its rigorous standards, typically demands extensive preparation and multiple attempts from most aspirants. However, exceptional candidates like Sharma manage to succeed on their first try.
Hailing from Salehar village near Bishnah in Jammu district, Sharma’s journey to success was marked by unwavering dedication and hard work. He began his UPSC preparations soon after completing his class 12th from Army Public School Ratanuchak, subsequently enrolling at GGM Science College for his higher education. Remarkably, he commuted 50 to 60 km daily to attend college and still managed to participate in UPSC coaching sessions, showcasing his relentless ambition.
The COVID-19 lockdown in 2020 provided Sharma with a unique opportunity to intensify his preparation. While many were confined to their homes with ample free time, Sharma used this period to focus rigorously on his studies. His efforts culminated in him clearing the UPSC exam just six days after graduating, achieving an impressive All India Rank (AIR) of 146 and becoming the youngest IRS officer of his batch.
Sharma’s success is also attributed to the supportive environment provided by his family. His parents, Madan Lal Sharma and Ritu Mangotra, are both educators, ensuring a foundation rooted in the value of learning. Additionally, his cousin, Prayasi Sharma, an esteemed IAS officer, served as a constant source of inspiration and motivation.
