CRPF Jawan Killed in Militant Ambush in Manipur’s Jiribam
Guwahati: A CRPF jawan lost his life, while two Manipur police personnel were injured in an ambush by suspected militants in Jiribam district, Manipur, on Sunday morning. An unidentified individual was critically hurt and taken to a hospital in Silchar, Assam.
The attack occurred at Morbung village as a joint team of CRPF and Manipur police was patrolling the Assam border. Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh condemned the assault, attributing it to armed Kuki militants, contrary to the Kuki Inpi Manipur’s claim of it being a "state-sponsored attack."
The deceased, identified as 43-year-old Ajay Kumar Jha from Bihar’s Madhubani district, was hit by a bullet in the forehead and declared dead on arrival at a local hospital. The two injured police personnel are reportedly out of danger.
This is the second such incident targeting security forces in Manipur this month. Earlier, on June 10, another attack on CM Biren Singh’s security convoy in Kangpokpi district injured a policeman.
The ambush took place around 8:40 am while the team was en route to Mongbung village to oversee security force deployment. Militants, positioned at multiple locations, opened heavy fire, to which the security personnel retaliated. A CRPF jawan driving a vehicle succumbed to bullet injuries, and two police officers sustained pellet injuries. The situation was controlled by noon. Militants are believed to be hiding in nearby forested hills, from where they continue their assault.
Additional security forces have been dispatched to Mongbung, and a combing operation to root out the militants has commenced.
